WATER LEAKS WASTE 1 TRILLION GALLONS PER YEAR

1
Nov

How much water is wasted in your home, due to leaks? Average households leak more than 10,000 gallons of water per year. 10 percent of homes waste 90 gallons of water, and more per day, according to epa.gov/watersense. That’s a significant amount of waste. The question is, how do we take action to eliminate leaks and water waste?

Bathrooms in most homes are the typical locations for the greatest amount of wasted water. Many leaks occur from dripping/leaking faucets, showerheads, toilet flappers, and other leaking water valves. We also know that a good amount of wasted water happens with personal habits when washing, brushing teeth, bathing, showering, and more.

The best solutions for saving water is to watch for leaks and have them repaired immediately. Commit to turning off or slowing the flow of running water when shaving, brushing teeth, washing hair, and washing dishes, and be mindful of how much water is running and being wasted. Fixing household water leaks in the home can save you 10% on your water bills. Most of all it helps conserve a precious resource.

Check for leaking water in your home by using these techniques.

  • Check for toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring into the water tank. If color shows up in the toilet bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak. Flush the food coloring from toilet immediately after testing.
  • Check visible pipes and all faucet gaskets for surface leaks.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water has been used. There is likely a leak if the meter shows any change.

Once leaks are identified, it’s time to call the professionals at Marlin to properly take care of the repairs. You’ll be on your way to conserving water and reducing moisture inside the home, and you’ll save money along the way.

CONSERVE WATER AT HOME – SIMPLE CHANGES

22
Sep

Ms Faucet leakingWe all know water is a precious resource and especially in the desert, where we live. Water is essential to our everyday lives. That said, it is important that we do our part in conserving and protecting our water supply. Look at our neighbors in California who are experiencing many hardships due to scarcity of water.

We can make simple changes to our water consumption that can have a great impact on our lives and the environment. Here are ways we all can help our water conservation:

  • In Greater Phoenix, outdoor water use accounts for approximately 70% of our household water use.
  • Swimming pools can lose up to 15,000 gallons of water every year due to evaporation.
  • Cover your pool when it is not in use to save on evaporation.
  • Check your pool for leaks and repair them quickly.
  • Conserve water with a variable-speed pool pump.

Inside the home, there are numerous ways to save on water usage:

  • Careful not to let excess water run from faucets and showers.
  • Reuse water from cooking and rinsing.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water, rather than running excess water from the tap.
  • Water houseplants or outdoor plants with re-purposed water from the kitchen and bath.

In the bathroom: showers, toilets and faucets can waste up to 30% of indoor water. Conserve on the amount of water you run while showering and washing in morning and evenings. It all adds up.

  • Install water-efficient faucets, shower heads and toilets.
  • Take shorter showers and use less bathwater in the tub.
  • You can collect cold bath water or shower water for watering plants.

In the laundry room, older washers can use up to 50 gallons of water, and newer Energy Star washers only use 18-20 gallons per load.

  • Adjust water level to the size load for greater efficiency.
  • Wash clothes in cold water for energy savings.
  • Check washing machine hoses for leaks and replace them immediately.

Now, these water-saving tips are easy enough for us to each go out and make a difference.
