PLUMBING MATTERS
Water-efficient plumbing is making a difference in today’s water and energy bills. Take a look at these excerpts from Contractor Magazine, “10 reasons why plumbing matters”.
Plumbing manufacturing innovations to gain water efficiency have dramatically reduced the amount of water used through toilets, showerheads, faucets and other plumbing products. For example, WaterSense plumbing products meeting Environmental Protection Agency criteria have saved consumers 757 billion gallons of water and $14.2 billion in water and energy bills since 2006, according to the EPA.
To assure customer satisfaction, WaterSense products are certified to perform as well or better than standard models – all while saving at least 20 percent more water.
The increased use of water-efficient plumbing is important, yet often overlooked, part of the water sustainability solution. The EPA estimates that the United States could save 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $17 billion dollars annually if every U.S. household converted to WaterSense products. High-efficiency plumbing in commercial facilities can help save even more.

CONSERVE WATER AT HOME – SIMPLE CHANGES
We all know water is a precious resource and especially in the desert, where we live. Water is essential to our everyday lives. That said, it is important that we do our part in conserving and protecting our water supply. Look at our neighbors in California who are experiencing many hardships due to scarcity of water.
We can make simple changes to our water consumption that can have a great impact on our lives and the environment. Here are ways we all can help our water conservation:
- In Greater Phoenix, outdoor water use accounts for approximately 70% of our household water use.
- Swimming pools can lose up to 15,000 gallons of water every year due to evaporation.
- Cover your pool when it is not in use to save on evaporation.
- Check your pool for leaks and repair them quickly.
- Conserve water with a variable-speed pool pump.
Inside the home, there are numerous ways to save on water usage:
- Careful not to let excess water run from faucets and showers.
- Reuse water from cooking and rinsing.
- Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water, rather than running excess water from the tap.
- Water houseplants or outdoor plants with re-purposed water from the kitchen and bath.
In the bathroom: showers, toilets and faucets can waste up to 30% of indoor water. Conserve on the amount of water you run while showering and washing in morning and evenings. It all adds up.
- Install water-efficient faucets, shower heads and toilets.
- Take shorter showers and use less bathwater in the tub.
- You can collect cold bath water or shower water for watering plants.
In the laundry room, older washers can use up to 50 gallons of water, and newer Energy Star washers only use 18-20 gallons per load.
- Adjust water level to the size load for greater efficiency.
- Wash clothes in cold water for energy savings.
- Check washing machine hoses for leaks and replace them immediately.
Now, these water-saving tips are easy enough for us to each go out and make a difference.

St. Patrick’s Day and Fix a Leak Week – It Starts on March 17th!
We all know when to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. But did you know about Fix a Leak Week?
It’s March 17– 23, 2014. Some cities have festivals and fun planned around this week and Phoenix is one of them. Check it out and join in the fun.
http://www.fixaleakweekaz.com/
Fix a Leak Week was conceived by WaterSense and the (EPA) and is celebrated in March to remind Americans to check their household fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks. An astonishing amount of water is wasted each year as a result of simple leaks.
- 1 Trillion Gallons: More than 1 trillion gallons of water is wasted each year nationwide as a result of household leaks.
- 10,000 Gallons of Water: 10,000 gallons of water is the equivalent of the water used for 270 loads of laundry. It is the average wasted per household because of leaks.
- 90 Gallons per Day: 10% of households have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water per day.
To give you an idea how much 1 trillion gallons of water is – this equals the water usage of 11 million households!

Budgeting for Your Kitchen or Bathroom Renovation? – Don’t Forget About the Plumbing
Remodeling a kitchen or bathroom is fun. There are cabinets to choose, countertops to pick, shopping for tile, appliances and flooring…it seems like a never-end list. But it’s a fun list because you know the end result is going to be a great improvement from what you currently have in your kitchen and bathroom. Plus, new things always feel so good and look so good.
When you are planning your budget – don’t forget to plan for the plumbing too. Cabinets, countertops, tile and flooring are the big items. They are the bulk of your expenses and the reason you have to plan in advance and set a budget. You will never forget to plan for these expenses because they are central to the whole remodeling project. But it can be easy to forget about the “little things” like a sink faucet, whether it is a kitchen faucet or a bathroom faucet. In the grand scheme of things, a faucet is a much lesser expense than the countertop or cabinets, but if you forget that you need to buy all new faucets AND have them installed, it could put you over your maximum “what I want to spend” budget.
So…regarding the plumbing portion of your remodeling project, these are some things to remember:
In the Kitchen –
- What kind of sink do you want? (i.e. single or double, undermount, stainless steel or other material)
- What sink accessories would you like to include? (i.e. faucets, hoses, garbage disposal, water filters, soap/lotion dispensers)
- Will the kitchen configuration remain the same or will you need to install new connections for the sink, refrigerator and dishwasher?
- Do you need new appliances? (i.e. Refrigerator, dishwasher and others that may need an electrical contractor as well as a plumber)
- Do you need to hire a contractor to install these items?
In the Bathroom –
- What kind of sink do you want? (i.e. single or double, undermount, china or other material)
- What sink faucets would you like? (i.e. finish, style, installation and features)
- Do you need to replace the tub and shower? (i.e. new or refresh, new showerhead and faucets)
- Will you be replacing the current toilet?
- Will the configuration of the bathroom remain the same?
- Are you adding new features to the bathroom, like a hot tub or spa?
- Do you need to hire a contractor to install these items?
Remember, every project (no matter what room in the house you are remodeling) should include some very basic considerations:
- What is your budget?
- What is the goal of the renovation?
- What is the purpose of the room and how will you utilize it?
- What do you like about the current room?
- What do you dislike about the current room?
- What type of storage do you need in the room?
- What style do you want as the theme of the renovation?
Of course, budget is often the central factor in a remodeling project. Be sure you include all aspects of your renovation, whether large or small items, so that you are fully prepared so you can finish the project and be happy with the end result.
