SAVINGS WITH WATERSENSE FAUCETS & AERATORS

15
Mar

Spring is a good time to repair, replace, and maintain household equipment such as plumbing, air conditioning, appliances, and more. It’s the time most of us get excited about cleaning up around the house, updating/remodeling, and replacing old, worn out household items.

Nationwide, we have the capability of saving billions of gallons of water annually by retrofitting older bathroom faucets with WaterSense models. Water efficiency is increased substantially and water performance is not compromised. Using WaterSense faucets and accessories at a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute can reduce a sink’s water flow by 30% and more, over the standard flow of 2.2 gallons per minute. The country could save close to $1.2 billion in water and energy costs – and 64 billion gallons of water annually.

WaterSense labeled bathroom and kitchen sink faucets and aerators are available in a wide range of styles, brands, and prices – and they help reduce the use of our precious water resources. It is wise to also consider WaterSense high–performing, water-efficient fixtures in the kitchen to help reduce even more water use, and to save money on water bills.

Products with the WaterSense label have completed an independent certification process, which meets all EPA criteria. It is a label that helps
us all.

Conserve water, save money, and preserve our resources.

PLUMBING MATTERS

22
Feb

ms shower headWater-efficient plumbing is making a difference in today’s water and energy bills. Take a look at these excerpts from Contractor Magazine, “10 reasons why plumbing matters”.

Plumbing manufacturing innovations to gain water efficiency have dramatically reduced the amount of water used through toilets, showerheads, faucets and other plumbing products. For example, WaterSense plumbing products meeting Environmental Protection Agency criteria have saved consumers 757 billion gallons of water and $14.2 billion in water and energy bills since 2006, according to the EPA.

To assure customer satisfaction, WaterSense products are certified to perform as well or better than standard models – all while saving at least 20 percent more water.

The increased use of water-efficient plumbing is important, yet often overlooked, part of the water sustainability solution. The EPA estimates that the United States could save 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $17 billion dollars annually if every U.S. household converted to WaterSense products. High-efficiency plumbing in commercial facilities can help save even more.

KNOW WHEN TO CALL THE PLUMBER

MS drain clearing

Many people don’t even think about the care of their plumbing system until it becomes an issue. As with most other major household systems, every plumbing system needs regular care and maintenance for best day-to-day performance – and most of all to help keep your household running smoothly. Rather than wait until you need emergency service, it’s good to know the key areas of your home to check for leaks.

At Home, Watch For:
• Areas where leaks can occur, such as: kitchen and bath faucets, pipes under sinks, showers and bathtubs. Check these areas periodically. The sooner water leaks are detected, the better off you are. It’s best to have plumbing repairs taken care of immediately so as not to incur additional damage and expense. Allowing small leaks to continue, there is greater potential of damaging floors, drywall and fixtures.

When to Call Your Plumber:
• Once water pressure is noticeably low, there is a change in the color of water, or when there are slow draining sinks, showers and tubs… Call your plumber at Marlin Services for professional service and repair 24/7.

What to Watch For:
• Excess water on the floor, loose tiles on tub surround, or damp walls hours after a bath.
• Kitchen sinks and toilets with discolored water, or faucets making rattling sounds when water is running.
• Plumbing leaks can be a substantial expense, when left untreated. We encourage you to check for signs of leaks and plumbing concerns regularly and especially before leaving home on vacation.

It’s always a good idea to perform your own seasonal home inspection as you move into a new season. Plumbing is one of those things that can easily be forgotten and go unchecked until there’s a major issue. With summer upon us, we want to share tips that can help keep your home running well and allow you to relax and enjoy the season and your vacation. Check these out:

  • Check for water leaks indoors before you leave home on vacation. Key locations to check are sinks, showers, tubs and toilets for leaks, and be sure to have any leaks repaired before vacation. Also, check around major appliances for leaks and possible issues that need attention.
    MS Leaky faucet
  • Be sure to check for outdoor plumbing leaks as well. Perform a quick tour of your yard and checking all the water faucets, drip system, and pool plumbing too.
  • Turn off water at the main shut-off valve, unless there’s reason to leave it on when on vacation.
  • Toilets collect bacteria, and it’s a good idea to pour a half a cup of chlorine bleach into each toilet bowl before leaving on a trip.
  • If you are leaving for a long time, have a neighbor or friend turn the water on and run the faucets at least once a month. They can also run the dishwasher and flush toilets to keep them functioning well and eliminate unwanted odors during your time away.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS VACATION REMINDERS:

  • Before vacation, unplug small appliances, computers, TVs, lamps, etc., in order to save on utilities
  • Make sure smoke detectors and thermostats have fresh batteries and are in good working condition.
  • Leave emergency contact information for your house sitter. Be sure to include a list of names and contact information, including Marlin Services for Plumbing & Air Conditioning needs, your electrician, yard, pool service, and others – just in case.

Have a great summer and memorable vacation with family and friends. Enjoy the summer with your home in good working order.

St. Patrick’s Day and Fix a Leak Week – It Starts on March 17th!

11
Mar

fix_a_leak_week_march17-23

happy-st-patricks-dayWe all know when to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. But did you know about Fix a Leak Week?

It’s March 17– 23, 2014. Some cities have festivals and fun planned around this week and Phoenix is one of them. Check it out and join in the fun.

http://www.fixaleakweekaz.com/

Fix a Leak Week was conceived by WaterSense and the (EPA) and is celebrated in March to remind Americans to check their household fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks. An astonishing amount of water is wasted each year as a result of simple leaks.

  •  1 Trillion Gallons: More than 1 trillion gallons of water is wasted each year nationwide as a result of household leaks.
  • 10,000 Gallons of Water: 10,000 gallons of water is the equivalent of the water used for 270 loads of laundry. It is the average wasted per household because of leaks.
  • 90 Gallons per Day: 10% of households have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water per day.

To give you an idea how much 1 trillion gallons of water is – this equals the water usage of 11 million households!

There is a lot of good information on the Fix a Leak websites:

If you think your water bills are higher than they should be, check your faucets, showerheads, toilets and outdoor fixtures for leaking. If you are unsure how to do it, call a professional. It will save you money, in the long run. It will also help save our planet’s ever-dwindling water supply.

Budgeting for Your Kitchen or Bathroom Renovation? – Don’t Forget About the Plumbing

30
Nov

Remodeling a kitchen or bathroom is fun. There are cabinets to choose, countertops to pick, shopping for tile, appliances and flooring…it seems like a never-end list. But it’s a fun list because you know the end result is going to be a great improvement from what you currently have in your kitchen and bathroom. Plus, new things always feel so good and look so good.

When you are planning your budget – don’t forget to plan for the plumbing too. Cabinets, countertops, tile and flooring are the big items. They are the bulk of your expenses and the reason you have to plan in advance and set a budget. You will never forget to plan for these expenses because they are central to the whole remodeling project. But it can be easy to forget about the “little things” like a sink faucet, whether it is a kitchen faucet or a bathroom faucet. In the grand scheme of things, a faucet is a much lesser expense than the countertop or cabinets, but if you forget that you need to buy all new faucets AND have them installed, it could put you over your maximum “what I want to spend” budget.

So…regarding the plumbing portion of your remodeling project, these are some things to remember:

kitchen renovation

In the Kitchen –

  • What kind of sink do you want? (i.e. single or double, undermount, stainless steel or other material)
  • What sink accessories would you like to include? (i.e. faucets, hoses, garbage disposal, water filters, soap/lotion dispensers)
  • Will the kitchen configuration remain the same or will you need to install new connections for the sink, refrigerator and dishwasher?
  • Do you need new appliances? (i.e. Refrigerator, dishwasher and others that may need an electrical contractor as well as a plumber)
  • Do you need to hire a contractor to install these items?

bathroom renovation

In the Bathroom –

  • What kind of sink do you want? (i.e. single or double, undermount, china or other material)
  • What sink faucets would you like? (i.e. finish, style, installation and features)
  • Do you need to replace the tub and shower? (i.e. new or refresh, new showerhead and faucets)
  • Will you be replacing the current toilet?
  • Will the configuration of the bathroom remain the same?
  • Are you adding new features to the bathroom, like a hot tub or spa?
  • Do you need to hire a contractor to install these items?

Remember, every project (no matter what room in the house you are remodeling) should include some very basic considerations:

  • What is your budget?
  • What is the goal of the renovation?
  • What is the purpose of the room and how will you utilize it?
  • What do you like about the current room?
  • What do you dislike about the current room?
  • What type of storage do you need in the room?
  • What style do you want as the theme of the renovation?

Of course, budget is often the central factor in a remodeling project. Be sure you include all aspects of your renovation, whether large or small items, so that you are fully prepared so you can finish the project and be happy with the end result.
