MAIN LINE CLEARING HELPS PREVENT CLOGS, CORROSION & PLUMBING EMERGENCIES
Anyone know the condition of your sewer line? Most of us don’t pay much attention to main sewer lines until there is a problem. Sewer lines become clogged over time and for a variety of reasons when there is no regular maintenance done.
Pipes can accumulate residue from lotions, face creams, toothpaste, grease, food debris, and many other common items. When items other than toilet paper and waste are flushed, clogs can occur. Additionally, tree roots can break through the main line, and older homes can have occurrences of corroded or collapsed pipes.
Whatever the reason, a blocked sewer line is not fun. It can disrupt your household routine and prevent the use of the plumbing system until the line has been cleared and repaired as needed.
Your sewer line takes the path from your home to the city sewer system or in some cases your septic tank, and it is best to have your licensed plumber, Marlin Services, take care of your main line problems quickly.
Be Attentive to Key Signs of a Clogged Sewer Line
• Sewage starts backing up and oozing from the drains
• Loud gurgling sounds can be heard from the drain
• Drains begin to slow down
• Toilets require more than one flush
• Corroded or collapsed pipes can occur with time
• Tree roots break through the pipes
Don’t wait to call the plumber when you see signs of sewer line problems. A successful drain clearing is instantly noticed and all signs of clogged drains are gone.

SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR MAINLINE DRAIN CLEARING
How often do you think about the drain system in your home? Most of us don’t ever consider it until there’s a clog or something major goes wrong with the plumbing. For a moment, think about the hassle and annoyance that occurs when a sink, shower, tub, or toilet backs up. It can disrupt whatever you are doing at the time or create an emergency situation for you.
Scum and debris naturally accumulate in household drain pipes from soaps, lotions, food waste, hair, grease, and various types of items from everyday use. Everyday items can drop into toilets, kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, and bathtubs that can cause or contribute to drain blockage.
In the Kitchen: Pipe build up can occur from a variety of items like soap, grease, food debris, and more, causing drain clogs.
In the Bathroom: Many things can cause pipes to block and scum to build up. Hair, toothpaste, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, creams, toilet paper, and items thrown into toilets (that don’t belong there) are major culprits in drain clogging. Over time, these things accumulate and cause buildup that can eventually cause major drain blockage.

In the Utility Room: Lint, dirt and accumulated debris can create drain issues, which can lead to flooding, blockage, and poor drainage in the home.
Notice when water starts accumulating in the sink as you’re doing dishes, washing your hands, taking a shower and draining a tub. It might drain slowly or, in extreme cases, not at all. These problems don’t typically occur overnight. They tend to build up and worsen over time.
When drains are running slowly or are clogged, it’s best to call on professional, licensed plumbers, like Marlin to properly clear the drain issues in the home. Plungers and other home remedies are usually only temporary fixes. It’s a good practice to have your plumbing system cleared about every two years to maintain smooth flowing pipes and to be comfortable in your home.

CLOGS, LEAKS, AND DRAINS
Clogs happen in most everyone’s home and they occur for a variety of reasons. Sink, tub, and toilet clogs can be relatively simple – and can often be cleared with a plunger. When all the drains in your home are clogged and backing up, it’s time to call the professionals at Marlin Services. Leave the big jobs to the experts and have your repairs, leaks, and clogs taken care of as they occur. It’s best not to wait and take a chance of leaks damaging walls, floors, cabinets, and more.
It takes a professional plumber to clear main line clogs and repair or replace pipe damage. In the case of tree roots growing through main line pipes, the professionals can bore through roots to clear the main line for clear running pipes.
When main line pipes start to deteriorate, you’ll need the plumber to replace those pipes for you. Indoor pipes are simpler to repair than the underground drain lines.
NOTE: Homeowners are responsible for the repair, maintenance, drain clearing, and pipe replacement on their own property. The homeowner is responsible for pipes, starting at the connection point of the city sewer system as well as those leading to the house and including home’s plumbing situation. This includes lateral lines and all main line plumbing in the home.
THINK PREVENTION WHEN IT COMES TO DRAINS:
- Avoid using toilets to throw away trash
- Avoid disposing of wipes, feminine hygiene products, diapers, matches, paper towels, cotton tips, etc., into toilets
- Keep bathroom drains clear of hair clogs
- Be mindful of the foods disposed of in food disposers

- Turn off water at the main shut-off valve, unless there’s reason to leave it on when on vacation.
- Toilets collect bacteria, and it’s a good idea to pour a half a cup of chlorine bleach into each toilet bowl before leaving on a trip.

Our Best Laundry Room Plumbing and Maintenance Tips
We are all so busy these days. Laundry is something that seems to keep piling up with no end in sight. We want to get it done as quickly as possible and get in and out of the laundry room so we can enjoy the sunshine of Arizona. It’s easy to become complacent and overlook simple steps which keep things running smoothly in the laundry, conserve energy and keep your family safe. Sometimes these simple steps seem so minor, we feel like they cannot really make a big difference in our lives. But they really do help and can prevent trouble prematurely, like having to replace your washer and dryer earlier than expected.
- Run the washing machine only when it has a full load.
- Inspect washing machine hoses for signs of wear. Replace rubber hoses with stainless steel braided hoses. (Available from your Marlin Service Tech.) They last longer and are resistant to leaks and cracks.
- Ensure that all drains have strainers to keep hair, soap and debris from entering and clogging the drain lines.
- Use a strainer on your washing machine hose. Marlin has strainers specially designed to fit laundry hoses.
- Check exposed pipes under sinks for signs of leaks.
- Apply an enzyme drain cleaner (available from Marlin Services) to laundry drain lines once each month to keep lint and detergent scum from building up and causing clogs.
- To prevent sewer gases from backing up into your home through your laundry sink drain or other infrequently used drains, periodically pour a bucket of water down the drain to keep the trap seal full.
- Install a flood alarm to warn of water from the washing machine or water heater leaking from the appliance or overflowing sinks.
Conserve energy and prevent scalding by checking the temperature setting on your water heater. It should not be above 120 degrees Fahrenheit or medium setting on older models.- Consider replacing a worn out washing machine with a more efficient front-load model.
- Never store flammable liquids such as gasoline, adhesives or solvents near the water heater, furnace or other gas-fired appliance as they may ignite.
You don’t want to be in the market for a new washer and dryer very often. The average life span is somewhere between 12 and 13 years. Follow these simple tips and maybe you can extend the life of these appliances even longer.

We all know when to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. But did you know about Fix a Leak Week?
It’s March 17– 23, 2014. Some cities have festivals and fun planned around this week and Phoenix is one of them. Check it out and join in the fun.
http://www.fixaleakweekaz.com/
Fix a Leak Week was conceived by WaterSense and the (EPA) and is celebrated in March to remind Americans to check their household fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks. An astonishing amount of water is wasted each year as a result of simple leaks.
- 1 Trillion Gallons: More than 1 trillion gallons of water is wasted each year nationwide as a result of household leaks.
- 10,000 Gallons of Water: 10,000 gallons of water is the equivalent of the water used for 270 loads of laundry. It is the average wasted per household because of leaks.
- 90 Gallons per Day: 10% of households have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water per day.
To give you an idea how much 1 trillion gallons of water is – this equals the water usage of 11 million households!

How To Clean Your Aerator
How to Clean Your Aerator
If you have been experiencing low water pressure from your faucet, you may want to spend some time looking into why that’s happening. Marlin Services will be giving you a few ways to properly check your faucet. This will help you find the cause of your low water pressure problems. Start by checking the aerator of your faucet to see if it leaks when the water is on. If so, this may be caused by lime buildup and sediment blocking and will need to be cleaned in order to get your water pressure back to normal.
First: Unscrew the aerator from the faucet. If it has to much build up to remove with your hands, get a pair of pliers to help loosen it. {To make sure you don’t scratch or damage your sink, wrap the jaws of the pliers with a cloth – & then remove}
Second: Take the spray head apart so you can begin your cleaning process.
Third: Soak the aerator in vinegar to help loosen the sediment buildup. Then get a small brush to remove any additional blockage in the spray head.
Forth: You can now reassemble your aerator by screwing it back into place.

If you are experiencing foul odors from food build up, try grinding up lemon rinds {while water is running} for about 30 seconds.
